If not for Angel's comment, it might have taken Willow much longer to figure out her real emotions. Having just seen – and felt! – her evil vampire counterpart acting all kinds of gay, and then him pointing out that a vampire's personality was based on the living person they'd been, well, it made her think. Think about how it had felt to have her vampire self's breasts pushing against her back, for example. Which, apart from the whole being scared out of her wits, had felt very nice indeed.
It also made her think about Buffy. How she had stared at Willow's cleavage and leather-clad hips while Willow was dressed up in the vampire's clothes. She'd even seen Buffy swallow and lick her lips at the sight.
It was some time before she dared do anything about the feelings. But one day, when Xander for some reason didn't show up at The Bronze in the evening, she found the courage to act. It was late, and she knew from long experience that it was only one or two songs left until the DJ switched from the bouncy dance music to the slow, intimate kind.
"Come on," she said, smiling at Buffy. "We've studied enough. Let's dance."
Buffy's eyebrows rose.
"Dance?" she said. "You want to dance?"
She smiled.
"Have you been replaced by an evil version from another reality again?" she said. "Because if so, that was so two weeks ago."
Willow shook her head, also smiling.
"I'm just plain old Willow," she said.
She turned toward Buffy, trying to show off what cleavage she had. From the way Buffy's eyes darted downwards, it worked.
"That's nothing to be sneezed at," Buffy said. "Because that would be unpleasant. Not to mention unhygienic."
Willow took Buffy's hand.
"So, dance?" she said.
"As if I could turn my Willow down," Buffy said.
So they danced. Willow did her best to move seductively, trying to remember how she'd seen Faith dance. Not that she could let herself go anywhere near that much, or have that many luscious curves. The nervous little voice inside her prayed that she at least wouldn't look like she was having an epileptic fit. Buffy, of course, moved with Slayer grace. Controlled, sleek, dangerous, like a beautiful great cat. Also, she moved close. So close that Willow could feel the heat that radiated from her, sometimes even Buffy's breath touching her skin. As much as she worried about others watching, about what others might think, she wanted this closeness too much to move away. Let others think she was a spaz, if they didn't already. She was dancing with the hottest girl in the Bronze.
And then the music changed. The lights changed with it, as did the people. Everything slowed down. Except Buffy, who stopped. She took a step back, looked at Willow with eyes that were suddenly frightened. Willow tried hard to remember the blush that had graced Buffy's cheeks as she looked down the top of vampire Willow's leather bustier, and drew courage from that obvious desire. Now, here, she put her hands on Buffy's hips and gently pulled her close.
"You want this too, right?" she whispered in Buffy's ear.
She felt her friend nod, and relief washed through her. Her arms moved to fully embrace Buffy's slender body, and as Buffy did the same to her they both began to move to the music. Body to body, hip to hip, they forgot the world and danced. Eventually, they kissed, and that broke down both girls' last reservations. They ended up in Willow's bedroom, since her house was closest, and from that night they were inseparable.
Many decades later, as Willow was writing her Watcher's biography of the only Slayer ever to die old and content in her own bed surrounded by grandchildren, she speculated briefly on what might have been if that night had never happened. If she hadn't figured her own desires out until later, and what might have sprung from that.
But that was mere idle whimsy, and she concluded that they would have ended up together in any case, for who or what could ever stop a love that pure and strong?
