Slightly less Monday than last week
Oct. 7th, 2002 03:14 pmMy friend is both worse and better than we tought. She's worse than we thought a week ago, when it looked like she'd live another fifteen months. She's better than we thought yesterday morning, when it looked like both her kidneys had given up. Which would've meant one or two days left, tops. As it turns out, there is about half a kidney that the cancer hasn't eaten yet. Which gives her another month. Maybe less. So if nothing else goes wrong, she'll probably die around Samhain.
It's scary seeing her. She used to be a big woman, tall and fairly muscular. She used to have an extremely strong personality. Someone (I forget who) once described her has "having all the gentle discretion of a steamroller wrapped in razorwire". Now there's hardly anything left. She weighs about half as much as she used to, all skin and bones. Pain and drugs are taking their toll on her mind, and instead of the no-bullshit intelligence I'm used to there is just... nothing.
The fight is over. For all practical purposes, my friend is already gone.
There is just the dying left.
