You know, I think that just up a few moments ago I had a theory that the reason I find it so unreasonably frustrating and hard to use Word was that I just didn't understand how it's supposed to be used. Then I found this article on how section breaks work in Word. And you know what? The people who designed that seriously need to lay off the crack. There is no way that storing one piece on information while displaying an other one entirely is good UI design. None. Neither is storing formatting information for a large part of a document in such a way that you can utterly destroy it by a misplaced backspace, at the same time as making it nearly impossible to move large sections between documents without completely fucking up formatting.

It's not me. It's them.

I have now spent several more hours reading documents about Microsoft Word, its well-known problems and a little of how it works internally. I would like to amend my statement that its behaviour is due to the developers being on crack. Clearly, that explanation is insufficient to explain the lovecraftian insanity that dwells inside Word. This thing must've been made by rabid cappucin monkeys on PCP. Evil rabid cappucin monkeys on PCP from Hell.
