You know, so far there hasn't actually been that much Sam/Janet material in this show above the level of "But they're so cute together!". Which is more than enough for fic, of course. But that short conversation in this ep where Janet tries to get Sam to rest a bit? That was approaching the lower Xena levels of slashy hinting, for sure.

Good episode in general. Much better than the one before.

[livejournal.com profile] temeres asks for an opinion on Men and femmeslash: pro-feminist, or backdoor sexism?.

To which the answer is "Er, what?", basically.

To begin with, both feminism and femmeslash are less then clearly defined, which makes a solid answer rather hard to give. Additionally, to the extent that they are widely understood, I feel that they are entirely orthogonal concepts. I'm also not sure about the way the question implies that the exact same piece of writing might be either pro-feminist or sexist (are those really antonyms, by the way?) depending on the gender of the writer. And how does that one in particular work together with my name, which I know often causes confusion about my gender among native English-speakers? Will my stories change from pro-feminist to sexist (or the other way around) depending on what the reader knows about me?

I do believe that propagating the memes of women as acting and choosing individuals are vital to the cause of minimising the societal differences between genders. The sort of fanfic about sexual relationships between women that I like will contain and hopefully propagate those memes. So will, hopefully, most of the stories I write. It is, of course, perfectly possible to create such fanfic that don't contain those memes. A strictly PWP story won't, for example (and that's why I say that I hope that only almost all my stories carry those memes), since it will contain nothing but sex. From there you can go all the way down to the depressing kind of "lesbian" porn there is shitloads of on the net, with two bored-looking surgically modified blondes pawing each other while fixedly staring into the camera while dressed up as Catwoman and Wonder Woman.

Still can't see how the gender of the creator modifies the memetic content of the product, though.

[livejournal.com profile] katlinel asks for an opinion on body hair. About which all I can say is that I've never understood why so many people seem to care so much about it. Sometimes it seems to me that the entire Western culture suffers from a joint body-image neurosis.
