A little while ago the earbuds to my iPod developed a crack inside the lead, so that it'd jump up and down insanely and scratch a lot when moved around. Which is kind of a killer for a portable player, so I went out and bought a new pair of earbuds. Since I'd noticed that Sennheiser had started selling sound-dampening earbuds for not that much money, I decided to get a pair. I like Sennheiser. The pair of HD600 headphones from them I bought back in 2000 are still one of the electronic things I've bought that I'm the most satisfied with. They're fantastic. Far and away the best headphones I've ever used, both in sound quality and wearing comfort. Way, way better than the supposedly professional-level stuff we used in the military.

Still, I was a little reluctant about buying the earbuds sight unseen. Or sound unheard, I guess. They are consumer-level stuff, while the HD600:s are at least semi-pro. But I got them anyway. And now I've used them for a week.

They're not quite as fantastic as the HD600. No surprise there, since they cost about 1/8 as much. They're still really, really good. They cut external sound a lot. Suddenly I can listen to soft classical music in noisy subway cars. I can drown out the infernal radio in the gym without keeping the iPod constantly at full volume. The sound is generally better. The bass is way better. Amazingly good for things this small, actually. And they're comfortable. About the only drawback I've noticed is that touching the lead produces audible noise. But since that's a totally mechanical effect, I'm not sure what could be done about it without losing both the sound isolation and the impressive bass.

Anyway, if you want better sound out of your portable mp3 player, do have a look at the Sennheiser CX-300 earbuds. They're good, and nowhere near as pricey as Etymotic.
