After using Vista for two months and a bit, the conclusion is clear: this is not an operating system that can be used for real.
Well, to be honest, that conclusion has been clear for some time now, it just wasn't until yesterday that I stumbled onto a reasonable way out of it. That's when I discovered that Vista has the ability to shrink its boot partition, leaving room for something else. In this case, Ubuntu Linux 7.10, since I had a CD with that on it within arm's reach.
This machine under Linux instead of Vista is unbelievably much faster. All silly delays are gone, several tasks can run at the same time... It behaves like a real computer.
There are, unfortunately, a few tings I need to run Windows for. Hopefully, I'll be able to handle those via the Windows XP that's currently installing in a VMware window near this one. If that works out reasonably well, the Vista partition will be deleted and get a Linux filesystem installed on it instead.
In conclusion: Windows Vista? Utter shite.
