In the Xena: Warrior Princess episode "One Against An Army", when it looks like Gabby is dying, Xena says to her: "Even in death, Gabrielle, I will never leave you." Later on, in the opening double episode of season four, Xena demonstrates that she means this very literally, when she goes into the Amazon afterlife after Gabby and demonstrates a complete disregard for getting out again.

Xena's behavior is sane in the context of her stupid-history, gods-in-the-flesh setting, much the way that Batman is merely a very dedicated vigilante when considered in the context of a world where things like the Joker exist.
