I finished reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix yesterday. And was somewhat underwhelmed at the hyped Death Scene™. The phrase "No corpse, no kill" sprang to mind pretty much immediately.
Couldn't agree more. I had to go back and re-read it. Being charitable, I wonder whether Rowlings was so emotionally invested in the character that she shied away from hitting us, and herself, as hard as she could have done. If so, that's bad, a writer has to get past that kind of inhibition.
However, I feel sadder about the death now than I did as I was reading, because that person was my favourite character. So there was some kind of later impact, even if the impact at the time failed.
