LotR movie money

I've just been reading a Reuters notice with some numbers regarding the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. It says, among other things, that as long as Return of the King avoids doing worse than the first two movies (which seems a safe bet, since it so far is doing 25% better than either of them), the three movies together will have ticket sales of more than one billion dollars in the USA alone.

That's an absolutely absurd amount of money.
