Dinner

I have a new mission in life.

Some time, I'm going to visit a restaurant that has three stars in the Guide Rouge. Because if it really is significantly better than the dinner we just had, it will be worth travelling to another country for.

As I mentioned before, [livejournal.com profile] jennyaxe and I got some bonus money. Which we decided to use for a kick-ass wedding anniversary dinner at Edsbacka Krog, the only place in this country (AFAIK) that has two stars in the Guide. Said dinner weighed in at just under US$500, and it was worth every last bit of that. It's easily and without question the best meal I've ever eaten in my entire life. Particularly the third course (fillet of sole with lemon, truffle-flavoured vegetable boullion and a tomato and potato compote), which was utterly amazing. Not just tasty, but the sort of tasty that gives you goosebumps and makes your eyesight black out as every last neuron from the neck up suddenly gets busy just experiencing that wonderful taste.

And all that along with wines that didn't just go well with the food but actually gave the impression that they'd chosen the wine first and then designed the dish to go perfectly with it.

I am very impressed.

No less a personage than Elizabeth David said that two-starred eating establishments were the ones worth going for: three stars, she said, were too exalted for everyday life, and one star was a bit chancy, but with two stars you were certain of excellent (and consistently excellent) food.

What a fabulous thing to spend bonus money on, by the way.

That sounds like an absolutely fantastic experience, and a wonderful way to celebrate. I'm glad you enjoyed it - you deserve it.

Ohh, sounds like something I have to try then! :)
I love good food. Where is Edsbacka? It's outside Stockholm, isn't it?

It's in Sollentuna, and there's a bus from the communter train station to just outside their door. I've wanted to eat there for years, but as noted they are Not Cheap At All.

Hmm, sounds like a good birthday wish! :D
