I managed to write 56000 words with a few days to spare last year, so I'll be a bit disappointed if I can't do it this year too. After all, the point is just to get the words out, not that they have to be any good...

I've never got the point of the quantity over quality thing. Doesn't the world have enough lousy fiction already without encouraging more? Not that I imagine yours is lousy, 'cos you could only manage that if you deliberately tried, but the stated intentions of the thing just leave me a bit puzzled. Yes, people can edit it later, but there's only so much you can do with something that sucked to start with.
It's exercise. Training. If you can, for a time, make yourself not worry so much over every word in every sentence, you can practice getting the feel for larger-scale structure and character personality building and such. DIfferently put, when you don't care so much about every leaf of every branch of every tree it's easier to get a feel for what the forest is like.
I guess I can understand that approach to it, yeah. Hmmm... Most of that stuff goes on in my head, I think, before I ever sit down to write. But then my fics aren't 50,000 words long *g*
