Are any other amazons than Hippolyta ever mentioned by name in Greek myth? I can't think of any, and I hesitate to start stealing names from Xena.

Penthesilia gets a mention -- see here (http://www.fact-index.com/p/pe/penthesilea.html).

Amazons, Amazons

The first Amazon Queen was said to be Lysippe, a daughter of Ares. She founded the Amazon city of Themyscyra. Amazon queens included Marpesia, Lampado and Hippo.

At the time Hercules came on the scene, the three major Amazon tribes were ruled by Hippolyte, Antiiope and Melanippe.

In the story of Thesus, Thesus abducted the Antiope, who betrayed the Amazon city of Themyscyra to him. Her sister Oreithyia led the Amazon army aginst Thesus and in the fighting, Antiope was killed by Molpadia, who was in turn killed by Thesus.

The Amazon Queen Penthelesia fought a number of times, and was eventually killed in battle by Achilles. Her nurse Clete is credited with founding the Italian city of that name.

Hippolyte and Antiope are sisters (and sometimes are swapped in some of the myths). There are some very good Amazon myth resources here (http://wwfanfic.net/links.htm) (just scroll down to the myth section).

Which explains why Shakespeare used Thesevs and Hippolyte, not Antiope? Thanks. It cleaned up some of my confusion after the previous post.

in particular, Amazons Roster (http://www.whoosh.org/issue12/ruffel3.html#listing) might be exactly what you're looking for (and it ciets sources, I believe).
