He's written better, but by anyone else's standards it's pretty damn good.

One of the things I've had on the back burner for a long time is a Buffyverse / Culture crossover in which the expedition to Earth in the 1970s (in The State of the Art) runs into Spike, Dru, and Nikki the Vampire Slayer. It'd be fun to write, but so few BtVS fans know Banks that it'd probably sink without a trace.

When you're trying to write spaceoperaish stuff yourself, the realization that this is just Banks playing around a bit doesn't exactly make it less intimidating.
