Well, at 166 days of uptime and several weeks after Jenny got me a replacement disk, I'm finally going to replace the broken root disk in my desktop machine. Which will also mean upgrading it from FreeBSD 4.9 to 5.3.

5.3 is alright.
Well, until you try to use the volume management stuff. But as a desktop, it's fine.
