Stargate

While we were in Gothenburg, I used my net-less time to watch a few more episodes of Stargate SG-1. So now I've watched up to episode ten, Thor's Hammer.

Ep 4, Emancipation, sounded so aggressively bad that I skipped it. Let me know if that was wrong of me, or if something important arc-wise happened.

Ep 5, The Broca Divide, was an incredibly corny idea handled so well that the result actually became pretty entertaining. Plus, Carter in that top didn't look at all bad. Actually, Carter doesn't look at all bad at any time.

Ep 6, The First Commandment. SG-1 goes Heart of Darkness, kinda. And badly. Episode best forgotten.

Ep 7, Cold Lazarus, where we visit another corny old 50s-SciFi idea. Not too badly handled, so at least watchable.

Ep 8, The Nox, where we visit Principal Snyder with a wig made out of straw. Pretty stupid ep. And Apophis is a really crap god, isn't he?

Ep 9, Brief Candles, might have been slightly original if they hadn't infected O'Neill and focused entirely on him. Also hefty minus points for invoking nanotech without thinking about the consequences.

Ep 10, Thor's Hammer, looked like it was going to be the stupidest episode so far but recovered well and became one of the better ones. It was also nice to see where Helen of Troy ended up after Xena and Gabrielle saved her.

Overall, it's at least entertaining. There characters are decent enough (even though I find Jackson highly annoying), well played and the dialogue is fairly good. Not Buffy good, but at least far better than Charmed. I also guess that the amount of Jack/Daniel slash out there is roughly shitloads, and that most of it is bad.

Planning ahead, does anyone know where I can get hold of season two?

Amazon have them in box format if you are looking to buy... as I'm sure do all of the usual suspects.

Actually its Ep 3 as listed on gateworld (I don't have my disks with me so can't say for sure but I do know that the UK releases on VHS were in the wrong order - typical!) and yes the episode is pretty dire as I remember although it does have Carter in some interesting costume possibilities...

Apophis is a crap god - but then he's not really a god at all is he? Just an alien wearing an Edgar suit...

My economy doesn't really permit buying it at the moment, so I was hoping for more of an interim solution...

I've found a torrent that promises to get me the eps by Friday or so. If it breaks down halfways or something, I'll get back to you.

Mega shitloads and all of it.

No arc that I can recall in Emancipation. About the only good thing in it is the look on Jack's face when he sees Sam in that dress.

J/D: megashitloads, and some of it is pretty good. But not your thing, I suspect.

Emancipation is the worst episode of the series and 'the First commandment' is the second worst. YOu missed nothing arc-wise.

From now on, they get better for a long time before they start downhill several seasons down the line. Actually, the latest season has managed to partly reverse the trend and has had a few really good ones. They got some of the better writers back on board and the humour has come back again.

I've just seen one (season 8) that has some wonderful moments taking the micky of the very first episode. An AU Carter is trying out a speech and says the line about having sexual organs on the inside/outside. Then shakes her head and says that sounds like crap.

There's loads of Jack/Daniel. Not my cup of tea. In Stargate - shock, horror, probe - I write gen most of the time. Carter/O'Neill, Carter/Maybourne and Maybourne/O'Neill. You'll loathe Colonel Maybourne when he first appears. It'll be a couple of seasons down the line before you figure what I see in him.
