So much for a progressive Pope. Strangely, the biography page at his fan club (which is slashdotted into oblivion at the moment) neglects to mention his time in the Hitlerjugend.

NPR radio (http://www.npr.org/) mentioned the hilter youth thing.

why is everyone so surprised that ratzinger was elected? jp2 was an ultra conservative. he filled the curia with a bunch of conservative cardinals.

Who said anything about surprise? In my personal opinion, a misogynist homophobic fascist is a highly fitting representative for the Christian god.

There was some slight hope that they might choose someone who was better for Earth, but I don't think anybody really took that seriously.

didn't mean you were surprised, but as i zip through my f and fof list, i keep getting posts filled with folk gobsmacked that the rat got elected to the papacy. ::shrug:: heck, you know (at least i think you know) that i'm roman catholic, but i'm also gay, a realist and know waaay too much about the history of the roman catholic church that when i heard the news as i drove home from work, my only thought was that he's old, hopefully will go quickly, and not do too much damage while he's sitting in the big boy chair. there have been worse popes in history -- far worse. the only consolation (if there can be any) is that considering our world now, he can only do so much damage and the rest of the world will bitchslap him back in place.
