Google's Summer of Code
Jun. 1st, 2005 10:05 pmWhile this probably counts as a publicity stunt, it's far and away the coolest such stunt I can remember hearing about:
Google gives students $4500 for finishing an Open Source project between June 14th and October 1st. The project in question must be approved and overseen by one of the participating organisations, and there are funds allocated for up to 200 projects. Follow the link for details.
The particpating organisations (so far) are...
- The Perl Foundation
- The Python Software Foundation
- The Apache Software Foundation
- Ubuntu Linux
- The Mono Project
- The Gnome Foundation
- The Wine Project
- The Subversion Project
...so the possible choices of projects aren't particularly limited. Personally, I'd love to see some of that money go towards Pugs and the implementation of Perl 6.
