It's after SG-1 season 7 that Atlantis starts, yes? Do they do the crossover thing so that it pays off to watch episodes from the two series in some specific order (like BtVS S4/S7 and Angel S1/S4 did), or are they entirely separate?

THey're almost entirely separate, thank heaven.

ACtually, I seem to recall that the start of Atlantis is covered in Stargate, so best get to the point in Stargate where they find Atlantis and then carry on from there. Memory is a bit fuzzy now as it's a year ago for me.

Yeah, the Atlantis mission 'launches' from SG-1. And there have been a couple of cross-overs since.

Yes, but the 'cross-overs' rarely involve more than a guest actor from Stargate and the storylines don't interweave between the two shows.

Nothing at all like that. In *one* episode of SG-1, the Daedalus is leaving for Atlantis and the following SGA has it arriving, but that's the only time I can recall seeing any connection past the premiere.
