Linux is going mainstream, that's for sure. My sister's boyfriend's dad just called me and wanted help with installing it on his home machine. And here I thought I'd got free from that kind of support by not touching Windows...
I'm convinced that MacOS is the least painful way to connect your relatives (and similar people) to the internet. Linux's levels of integration aren't a patch on those in MacOS, especially for the job of connecting to the internet and handling mail,web, and basic office applications.
