[livejournal.com profile] altariel1 quotes [livejournal.com profile] communicator saying that anything can be improved by setting it in space. If one limits that to fictional things (my life wouldn't be improved by begin tossed into space, thank you) not already set in space, is that really true? Clearly this is subject for a poll.

That would make an interesting spinoff from Blake's 7, actually. With Servalan as an often mentioned but never seen threat to the poor minister.

The Illiad ...in space

Well look how good Ulysses 31 was.

Xena: Warrior Princess ...in space
Let's see - two hot chicks turn up on an alien world, fight a few monsters, etc... No reason why not, but I'm not convinced it would necessarily be better.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer ...in space
AKA Serenity. Again, I think it would work and have voted yes, but not convinced it's an improvement.

Dead Like Me ...in space
Not really - it revolves too much around the "finding someone in a crowded city" thing, and the whole thing about George's family wouldn't work.

Yes, Minister ...in space
Yes - a Federation politics thing for the Trek-verse would be immense fun, especially played for laughs.

Hamlet ...in space
No reason why not - again, not sure it improves anything.

Finnegans Wake ...in space
No - too much of the story is about place, wouldn't work on a space station or multiple worlds.

The Illiad ...in space
It's been done, several times. Works, not sure it improves anything.

Lord of the Rings ...in space
No - hiding from the Dark Riders by hiding in the photosphere of the nearest sun (or whatever) doesn't have the same ring somehow.

Wuthering Heights ...in space
No - think this one is too dependent on its setting.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe ...in space
Can't see any point to it.

I think several of these have been set in space and it wasn't an improvement. That's most definitely the case with "The Lion..." - every time I think of it in space, I think of the Perelandra trilogy and go "FUCK no!"

That Hideous Strength is my favourite Lewis novel, actually (not that that says much, but still). The first two books sucked badly, though. Particularly the second one.

And I'm slightly surprised that nobody's said "Somebody already did LotR In Space, and it's called Babylon 5" yet.

Really? His views on matrimony kind of gave me the hives.

Have you read Til We Have Faces?

Well, see parenthesis. It's been over a decade since I read any Lewis at all, and when watching the Narnia movie recently I was revolted by the blatant racism. So it's my favourite among a set of books I don't really like at all.

Buffy in space - wasn't that called Aliens? XD

Wuthering Heights, insofar as it could be improved at all without giving every major character a complete personality transplant, could certainly be made no worse by setting it in space, so I ticked yes. But it was a tough call.
