Cat update

The vet said it's probably an infected and rupturing boil in an anal gland. Which seems about as fun as it sounds like (while the vet was prodding it, he tried to claw someone for the first time in his twelve-year life). They're keeping him until tonight, so they can clean it out and treat it under general anesthetic. Then he'll have to eat antibiotics for a while, and wear one of those always popular lampshades around his head.

On the good side, this is apparently a fairly common problem for this breed of cat, and it usually turns out well.

The vet just called and said that the procedure went well, and we can go pick him up now.

Oh, that's all good to hear. I expect he'll be a little woozy for a while, but I'm glad that it's gone ok.

He seems fairly all right. Slightly wobbly, but well enough to be pissed off that he can't have any food. And he goes *bonk* a lot when he tries to take corners too closely :-)
