My, Red Hat sure has managed to capture that genuine sense of frustrated rage that you used to need Windows to achieve. With progress like that, maybe Linux will be ready for the desktop one of these years.

Last time my PC packed in I phoned up the guy I bought it from, asked him if there was anything I could do to stop it happening again.

His response: "Buy a mac."

Oh, I totally agree. [livejournal.com profile] jennyaxe and I used to run PCs with FreeBSD on them, but over the past year and a half we've completely switched to Macs (one iBook and one iMac each, so far).

The Red Hat machines are work, and the OS was not my choice.

but not one of the Intel ones, judging by some of the blog entries I'm seeing.

That falls under "Don't buy version x.0 of anything". Overall, I think the PowerPC->Intel switch is going much more smoothly than I remember the 68k->PowerPC one.

Have to say, I'm currently considering one of the 1.83GHz Intel laptops...

Over the course of the past couple of years, I have installed various versions of SuSE Linux on various machines (8.2, 9.0, 9.2, 10.0), Debian (Sarge), Ubuntu (each release to date I think), and FreeBSD (4.*, 5.*). No problems with any of these other than the usual initial learning curve; SuSE 9.2 is my current work and home desktop of choice, the plan being to switch to now released Ubuntu Dapper before security patch and bug fix support for SuSE 9.2 ends in approximately six months time.

Fedora Core? I have attempted to install 3 & 4, and have yet to get either version installed. Anaconda has crashed at some point during each installation (and, at one point, I did spend many hours attempting to install FC3 as I really did want to try it out, but eventually gave up in defeat).

So, I feel your pain.

Hmm. I've chronicled numerous failed attempts at installing FC (failures in Anaconda, or verification problems) - maybe it's not my actual hardware at all...
