Was it just me, or did it look a whole lot like we now have a canon Three/Six (with a bit of Balthar on the side, but that's easily ignored)?

I'm pretty sure you're talking about episode 8, "Hero", not 7. For the question itself, yes. Otherwise pretty much a filler episode.
