It can be in his backstory without being canon, though. If it wasn't important enough to the story to make it into the text, it's not canon, it's commentary. The author gets to make the text, he doesn't get to tell the reader how to interact with it afterwards. That way lies the death of art.

Although those university years also taught me that you can get away with saying almost anything if you can just dream up an argument that is sufficiently hard to argue against :-)

Well that's a relief, because you were beginning to confuse me. ;-) And I agree, the quality of an argument can often carry the day. I think lawyers rely on that a great deal.
