We have three trolls. Originally, they're my wife's, and she brought them along when we got together. But by now I think they've all accepted me as their backup human, who can give them food and cuddling when their real human isn't around.

The oldest one is a female called Pixel. And yes, the name's from Heinlein. She's half plain ordinary Cat™ and half something long-haired. So she looks like your average farm cat except that her fur is very thick. She was taken from her real mother when way too young and left to die, and ended up with my wife by way of an animal shelter. Pixel was the only one who survived from the entire litter. Since she didn't get to grow up with a cat mom, she seems to think that my wife is her mom. So sometimes she tries to do things like she does. Like eating by picking things up in her paw and bringing it to her mouth. Sometimes it works.

The second oldest one is a birman called Tusse, who my wife bought because Pixel was going nuttier from being alone while she was away working all day. If it hadn't been for some small genetic flaw that meant he can't be used for breeding, he'd be cat-exhibition material. Birmans are supposed to be cute, cuddly and talkative, and he is all that in spades. He's also a pretty stupid and clumsy cat, except when it comes to trying to get food. Then his IQ and dexterity suddenly increases to twice their normal levels. He figured out how to open doors back when the cat food was kept in a floor-height cupboard in the kitchen, something that Pixel never quite has managed. Tusse is also the one who occasionally decides that he must sleep under my pillow. And only mine, never my wife's. Oh, and he is the only cat I've met who can't figure out how to climb trees.

The last and youngest one is a plain ordinary cat called Z. As in zcat, and if that made you groan you're a Unix geek, aren't you? She joined the other two when the wife was looking for a new flat and one of the ones she looked at happened to have a bunch of nearly newborn kittens in it (with their cat-mom, this time). Very few things are as irresistably cute as kittens. Z is a small cat, only a little over two kilos, but very agile. She likes to hang around on the tops of the bookcases where the other two can't get.
