Time passes

Went to see my old friend Tobias and his two-year-old daughter today. The weather was nice, so we walked (with the daughter, Sophie, in her pram) down to the marina for a bit. Things down there didn't at all look like I remembered them. Which may be because I haven't been down there since 1986 or 1987.

So we got to talking about how things used to be and how they've changed. Tobias still lives not far from where we first met, which was in the sandbox outside the block of flats where my family had just moved in. That was 1975, and we were both all of five years old. The birchtrees that had then just been planted are now decent trees 5-6 meters tall, and the butt-ugly artworks that used to defile the lawns have been carted away long ago. The small shopping center that used to be a grocery store, a pizza place and a hairdresser now has more shops than I could easily see as I walked through the place. What used to be a long slope down to the train station is a big and actually quite pretty block of flats. The train station has been rebuilt from scratch, which is a huge improvement, because the old one was a testament to everything that's wrong with functionalist architecture. All in all, the place is rapidly becoming part of Stockholm proper, instead of being the outermost suburb it used to be.

And that feels strange.
