This time, we'd decided to take the 850-kilometer drive down to where Jenny's mom lives in two parts, with a sleepover somewhere along the way. Somewhere along the way turned out to be a village called Asa, in the part of Sweden called Småland. Jenny chose the place on the basis of the hostel having a web page claiming that there was bugger-all there except peace and quiet. Which turned out to be pretty much correct. You couldn't quite count the number of buildings in the village on the fingers of one hand, but you'd have several fingers to spare with two hands. It rained when we got there, the kind of soft persistent rain that has no drama to it at all but is fantastically effective when it comes to getting things wet. The clouds lay low over the hills around the village, and the only sounds were the whisper of raindrops against grass and the distant bleating of sheep.
