Do you end up with a popcorn-like expanded blob at the end of it? Might be interesting to start with uncooked chickpeas and oil and see if it's possible to make popchickpeas, and if it's edible.
No, these ended up with crater-like hollows in them. And I think chickpeas don't have nearly hard enough shells to get a proper popcorny explosive effect.
My guess would be that it has to do with the brittleness of them, so that they hold their shape until they break suddenly rather than deforming plasticly as pressure increases. But I don't remember enough physics to work it out properly...
