My iMac is developing a display problem (for a few seconds at a time, every other row of pixels moves a bit to the right). And its serial number turns out to be smack in the middle of the range that's known to be afflicted by the capacitor problem, so that's almost certainly it. Which, on the good side, should mean that I can get it repaired without paying anything. Bad side is I have no idea how long I'll have to be without it :-(

You're not going to repair it yourself? All you need is a capacitor and a bit of solder...

I don't own a soldering iron, and I suck at soldering even when it's not on a very crowded circuit board full of heat-sensitive components.

I don't own one either; I had to use the one at work. But the capacitors on the motherboard blew a couple of weeks after the three-year warranty ran out, so i had little choice...

I understand you will be frustrated if you have to wait when you have you iMac on the repair shop. I had my screen broken in june, the colour turned from white to yellow. I got a new one at guarantee but I had to wait. My husband bougt a little flat screen I could use untill I got my big screen. I was happy when I got the new one. It has better colours and it is good for my eyes.
